you can apply this technique to
any blocks with HSTs and QSTs.
The color-coded chart
also shows the number of each piece
required to make the entire block.

1) Make 5 Squares

The seam allowance is automatically included with the cut-out squares.
2) Make Four HSTs:
a) Attach two H (green) Additions to your ruler. They extend the cutting edge by 0.854".
b) Cut strips. Then, turn them 90º to make squares.

3) Make Eight QSTs
a) Attach two Q (red) Addition to your ruler. They extend the cutting edge by 1.207".

After sewing the pieces together, your block will measure 6 1/2". You’ll always have the extra 1/4” needed to sew the pieces, rows, or blocks together.
Seam Allowance Additions not only simplify the complex math of seam allowances, but they also help you make triangles more accurately than using a ruler alone. Click here to learn more about seam allowances for triangles.
